Using Video To Tell Your Story

Being able to tell your story through video, whether it be about your company or your personal life, is an essential component to showing people who you are and what your business is about. The video takes the power of an image and multiplies it over and over again because you no longer have to imagine what the context is around what you are seeing. You can hear the person you are seeing, hear their tone, their inflections, and all the emotions that come with verbal communication.

Learn From Social Media

Every single day, more than one billion videos will be seen on social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat. The social media platforms have a keen understanding of using video to tell stories, but it was Snapchat who took the live video and made it accessible to everybody. After seeing the success of Snapchat, both Facebook and Instagram added a live video component Facebook Live and Instagram Stories. The reason these social media platforms did this and made these capabilities available is that of the power of the video.

Creating The Right Video

The goal of using video is not particularly to sell, but more to create rapport with current and potential customers, and provide information in an entertaining way. Even though you are not creating videos to sell your products or services, having a video increases the chances that the viewer will purchase your good or service beyond simply just reading a blog or article posted on your website or social media platform.

Things like quality of the video, how you convey what you are saying on film, and the overall production of the video will help to bring your story to life on video.

  1. Show Your Viewers – Have you ever heard the phrase “I can show you better than I can tell you.” This is essentially what you are giving to your viewers through video. You are not just telling them your story, you are showing them.
  1. The Truth – Be honest with your viewers. Displaying honest true emotion and feeling, and providing accurate information is how you will bring your audience in and create trust.
  1. Use Your Audience – Use what you know about your audience to help shape your storytelling. Use experiences you think they may have gone through, problems they may have faced, and comments and feedback they have shared with you as a muse to frame how you speak to them through video and what you talk about.
  1. Remember What You Are Doing – You are not selling your viewers you are telling a story. You need to be sure the message of your story is clear and your audience understands the message you are trying to convey and how the story relates to them and your brand.

Utilizing video to tell who you are can be the difference between a new customer and a person who passed your site by.
