The Art of Listening
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past, and I still learn to this day, it’s this: Talk to people.
Last week, I had grown into a huge funk over what to do with a design. I had come up with the same basic concepts, and each one of them was horrible. I didn’t like them, Brian didn’t like them… It just wasn’t working. After staring at the screen for hours and rehashing the same boring designs, I finally got up and did what I should have done hours before; I asked for help.
Thank goodness Jen was extremely willing to do so. She gave me ideas, hints on different search techniques I hadn’t thought of before, and gave me an idea of concepts that I never would have come up with on my own. It was awesome, and I soaked up the information like a sponge! I loved being able to bounce ideas off of her, hearing her feedback, and her bouncing ideas off of me as well. It was some extremely welcome collaboration, and when I walked away, I had a more clear idea and understanding as to what I want to do with my design. It’s come a long way since then, and I look forward to everyone seeing it in the future.
Designing is fun, and if you’re huge into designing as well, I urge you to talk to people and collaborate.
See what you like, and what you don’t like. Ask others their opinions of it as well. Gain feedback, and think about it in terms of your design. Will it really look better this way? Would this really help make my design clearer, or would something else do the trick? Would this help the overall message of the concept come across easier, or is this concept a lost cause? Collaboration is key, and constructive feedback is essential for growing as a designer and helping your designs grow as well. So if you’re huge into designing, or just a beginner playing around with the idea, then I urge you to seek a group of honest people who can constructively give feedback on your specific designs. Post it somewhere and see what people think of it. Listen to that constructive criticism! Do whatever it takes to help you grow as a designer.
