Using Augmented Reality (AR) to your advantage

Augmented and virtual reality are ushering in a new age of personal experiences for businesses. From Google to Porsche, these big names are taking advantage of the advances in technology and finding ways to utilize them for their business. The aforementioned Porsche is doing just that. As of September 20, 2017, the company released a new 3-D augmented reality app, titled, Porsche AR-Imagine. The app allows consumers and enthusiasts the opportunity to design and create their own Porsche. It includes three vehicles, the 911 Turbo S, 718 Boxster S and Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo.
Augmented reality allows users to be true innovators and creators. Not only does it benefit businesses by extending their brand, but putting the power in users hands is just as useful. It gives users the ability to express their creative abilities while working with something they are interested in.
What is AR?
If you have been reading this and have been confused on what augmented reality is, then fret not. Merriam-Webster defines “Augmented Reality” as “an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device (such as a smartphone camera)”. A more basic version would sound like this: a version of “reality” that is enhanced through images that can only be seen through certain devices. The picture below shows an example of the technology being used with the famous video game, Pokemon.

How can AR benefit you?
Making normal people feel special is a powerful tool. Not every business can do it. Klaus Zellmer, President, and CEO at PCNA said it perfectly; “Innovation is at the heart of Porsche. We’re excited to offer consumers and enthusiasts a new way of experiencing our sports cars…”. Your goal with AR shouldn’t necessarily be to sell a product but to sell your brand. Because your options are essentially limitless, you can be as creative as you want. Find something that your market and new consumers may like and run with it. It doesn’t hurt to try new things and experiment with new technology. If anything, you could be the first company to try it and that will provide some separation in the market.
